Mortally wounded, Cúchulainn, legendary warrior of Irish mythology, tied himself to a standing stone so that he might continue to face his enemies. The original statue by Oliver Sheppard, dates from 1911 but it was later adopted as a memorial to the 1916 rising and placed in the GPO.
