On April 19, 2012, An Post issued two stamps to mark the centenary of the death of Bram Stoker, author of one of the world's most renowned horror novels, Dracula.

Bram Stoker was born in Dublin in 1847 and was educated at Trinity College. He worked as a civil servant and was also the drama critic of the Dublin Evening Mail. Following his marriage to Florence Balcombe in 1878, he moved to London where he became personal assistant to his acting idol Sir Henry Irving, and manager of Irving’s Lyceum Theatre.

In his spare time, Stoker wrote many novels to augment his income. The most famous of these was his fifth novel, Dracula, which was published in 1897. It tells the story of the Transylvanian vampire Count Dracula. The Count’s character was partly inspired by 15th century Romanian Prince Vlad III the Impaler, also known as Vlad Dracula.

In his lifetime, Stoker wrote eighteen books. He died in London in 1912.

The stamps were designed by David Rooney, based on his illustrations of Bram Stoker and Dracula.
